Vienna, Virginia – The Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce and the Valor Award Selection Committee in partnership with Fairfax County Officials held a press conference today to announce the 66 recipients of the 29th Annual Valor Awards, including the honoring of the heroic actions of many brave police officers involved in the tragic Sully Police Station incident last year.
In the past 28 years, Fairfax County has recognized only two distinguished individuals with the highest award, the Gold Medal of Valor. This year the Valor Selection Committee will award, Master Police Officer Michael E. Garbarino, Detective Vicky O. Armel, and Officer Richard A. Lehr with Gold Medals of Valor for heroism shown on the most tragic day in the history of the Fairfax County Police Department.
“The prosperity and quality of life that Fairfax County enjoys are due in no small measure to the selfless and courageous acts of our community's public safety and law enforcement employees,” said L. Burwell Gunn, Valor Selection Committee Chairman for the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce.
Since 1979, the Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce has honored our community’s public safety personnel at the annual Valor Awards, for their extraordinary acts of courage in the line of duty. Over the course of the last 28 years, nearly 350 men and women of the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department, Police Department and Office of the Sheriff and the Vienna and Herndon Police Departments have received bronze, silver or gold Medals of Valor for their heroic acts.
“The Chamber is honored each year to host the Valor Award Ceremony. Every day, the men and women of the Fairfax County Fire & Rescue Department, Police Department and Sheriff's Office put themselves in harm's way to protect our families, our homes and our businesses,” Gunn concluded.
